Apps I need… on any platform

I’ve been thinking a lot lately about switching from my main phone (which has been the iPhone 3GS since launch) to another platform. Of course, I’ve reviewed quite a few of the new competitors for other carriers, but there’s finally a crop of decent phones headed to AT&T (or at least compatible with their 3G bands) — which means I don’t have to switch networks and port my number just to use a new handset. While I have reservations about my options (namely, webOS, Android, or BlackBerry), I also have some deep interest in really jumping ship. So I’ve decided to compile a list of “must-have” applications I need to make this thing work. Here’s what I’ve got so far (and just a note, I’m pretty much ruling BlackBerry out right now… most of this stuff isn’t happening on that platform).
- Colloquy or an IRC app which has similar functionality to Colloquy. No problem here on Android, but a dead-end right now on webOS and BlackBerry. MUST HAVE SSL support.
- Mobile Air Mouse, or something similar. I need a functioning mouse / keyboard combo for my HTPC setup, and this is what I use now — works like a charm.
- A good Twitter client. I use Tweetie on my iPhone, but I don’t think it’s that great. I prefer something with notifications like Twidroid. Definitely more of the right idea.
- A weather app with some kind of widget or notification (persistent solution preferred). I pretty much need to know what the current temperature is at all times. Ideally, just the temp in the status bar (see above).
- A good NYC subway map app. I use CityTransit now and like it a lot.
- A Wikipedia app. Wikipanion is near perfect on the iPhone.
- Mint. Really. Just need Mint.
- Canabalt and iDracula at least. A functioning NES, SNES, Genesis, and most importantly TG16 emulator is welcome. I wouldn’t complain about SFIV either.
And really, that’s it! Seriously — besides really wanting to have a visual voicemail solution, this is all I need to get by. It’s not a huge list, but I doubt it will be complete for Android or webOS.
