Adam Yauch (better known as MCA of the Beastie Boys) died today.</p> <p>Now, I was never really a Beastie Boys fan. I think everyone had a song or two that they got into — I know I did. But I never really loved them or listened to their records as a habit. Friends of mine, however, put the LPs on repeat and just never quit. They would play them, obsessed, joke back at each other with lyrics, go to shows when they toured, end up at big festivals just to see them play. They really cared.</p> <p>I can honestly say the band was background to me. I&#8217;m not knocking them — I think they were brilliant at what they did, I think they revolutionized music, I think they changed the mainstream&#8217;s association with hip-hop forever. I just didn&#8217;t ever happen to fall in love with their records.</p> <p>But, there was always this sense as I was growing up, in the 80&#8217;s, the 90&#8217;s, even the aughts to some degree, that they were there. Forever. Permanent. They were background, but they were the background of my youth. Of growing up. Of figuring out what being an adult was like. You didn&#8217;t have to listen to them or even like them to know that they were there.</p> <p>They didn&#8217;t make really thoughtful music, or really moving music, and as I&#8217;ve already said, they didn&#8217;t matter that much to me as a band. But they were massively important to me, in some odd way, and hugely important to a lot of people for years and years.</p> <p>Hearing today that a member of the Beastie Boys had passed away — it felt like an out-of-body experience. When something that feels constant suddenly ceases to be, something that you always imagined would be around suddenly isn&#8217;t — it&#8217;s a shock to the system.</p> <p>Learning that MCA had died felt like losing some essential piece of the fabric of my youth. A bad, weird marker of time; a reminder that nothing is guaranteed, nothing is promised.</p> <p>There are certainly people that seem like they&#8217;ll live forever.
